The section of the Superior Hiking Trail stretching from Gooseberry Falls to Split Rock Lighthouse offers one of Minnesota's most iconic and rewarding hiking experiences. Beginning at Gooseberry Falls State Park, hikers are immediately greeted by the majestic multi-tiered waterfalls — a perfect starting point before venturing into the rugged backcountry.
As you progress, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Superior, glimpsed through dense forests of birch, aspen, and pine. Numerous spur trails lead to scenic overlooks and rocky bluffs perfect for a rest stop. The trail also winds through ravines, crosses footbridges over rushing streams, and reveals glimpses of diverse wildlife.
While the full stretch can be a challenging day hike or overnight backpacking trip, shorter out-and-back options from either end allow hikers of all skill levels to experience its beauty. Expect elevation changes and rugged terrain — rewarded with vistas around every bend.
